The Ibrox disasterdi Matt McGinn, una canzone che parla della tragedia di Ibrox del 1971, musica, calcio e dignità dei tifosi dei Rangers di Glasgow si fondono in poesia.
Abbiamo già accennato in un articolo passato della tragedia di Ibrox del 2 Gennaio 1971: si giocava il derby di Glasgow, noto come Old firm, il Celtic passò in vantaggio all’89esimo minuto e molti tifosi dei Rangers stavano abbandonando le gradinate dello stadio quando Colin Stein segnò l’inaspettato pareggio; a quel punto la folla si accalcò per risalire le scale di Ibrox, ma la gente era troppa..200 tifosi rimasero feriti e 66 morirono schiacciati o soffocati. Un disastro di proporzioni enormi che coinvolse , purtroppo, anche molti bambini.
Matt McGinn, poeta e cantautore scozzese con spiccato interesse per il sociale, ha deciso di mettere in musica questo avvenimento. McGlinn con il suo folk negli anni 60 e 70 ha raccontato al mondo le storie della sua terra, di Glasgow e la Scozia intera.

Two great goals had been scored,
In the last dying moments.

Their supporters all cheered them,

Not knowing what waited on staircase 13
66 people died there,
Some in flower of their manhood,
When the fences gave way
And the barriers they bent,
Seasoned Glasgow policemen with their faces all tearstained,
With brave efforts, endeavoured far worse to prevent.
All of Glasgow enjoined them,
For the first time in history.
In the Glasgow cathedral no Billy’s, no Dan’s
But the Old Firm united to pray for their victims,
Of a tragedy set in the memory of man.
