We’ve Got the Whole World in His Hands è l’inno del Nottingham Forest, una delle più belle espressioni del legame tra calcio e musica.
“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” è uno spiritual, il cui testo è stato scritto durante il servizio militare nella seconda guerra mondiale da Obie Philpot, un indiano Cherokee. Nel febbraio 1978 la versione cantata da tutta la squadra viene pubblicata su un disco il cui lato B riportava “The Forest March”, la canzone è poi stata adeguata alle varie situazioni ed ha avuto molto successo nei campi da gioco, come l’ironica “We’re the worst team in the League”. Oltre a quanto sia importante la squadra sul campo, c’è anche da spendere due parole sulle tifoseria, una della più note d’Inghilterra per i cori, il trasporto ed anche la violenza degli hooligans.

La versione di Laurie London with the Geoff Love Orchestra del 1958 entrò nella classifica delle canzoni popolari inglesi ed entrò nelle chart USA..una rarità per uin brano r’n’b negli anni’50! La versione di Mahalia Jackson fu numero 67 nella Billboard top 100 singles chart. Altre versioni di successo furono di Marian Anderson, Odetta, Jackie DeShannon, Perry Como, i Sandpipers, Nina Simone on And Her Friends.
Nel film del 1982 “Tootsie“, Dorothy Michaels (Dustin Hoffman) la canta cambiando però le parole in “I’ve got the whole world in my hands.”
Nel 1995, The Sisters of Glory, un gruppo gospel con Thelma Houston, CeCe Peniston, Phoebe Snow, Lois Walden, e Albertina Walker, ha incluso il brano nell’ album Good News in Hard Times pubblicato per la Warner Bros.
Nel film Con Air (1997), Steve Buscemi interpreta un serial killer che canta con una bambina “He’s got the whole world”.
Nel film Rocketman del 1997, Harland Williams interpreta il ruolo di un astronauta che canta questa canzone.
Il brano è utilizzato anche nella pubblicità della PlayStation Portable, con la versione “I have the whole world in my hands”
